Navigating Digital Transformation with AI

Connor Square v3
By Connor O'Keefe

Digital transformation means leveraging all available technology to improve your business, and these days, there’s one piece of technology that’s on everyone’s minds: AI. Artificial Intelligence is almost a buzzword at this point, but the potential for dramatic, paradigm shifting applications of the technology.   It can be used to increase customer acquisition, automate mundane processes, and unlock data that would otherwise remain hidden. AI is the present and future of digital transformation. Investing in AI solutions now will set your business up for success in the long run.

Generative AI

Generative AI is probably the most familiar application of AI for most people. It’s a broad category to be sure, but it’s home to the most well-known AI on the planet in ChatGPT. Generative AI takes the automation capabilities of traditional AI and introduces a new layer that allows machines to produce creative, unique outcomes. Blog posts, social media, even images and video, all are able to be created in the click of a button with generative AI programs. Generative AI can prove intensely useful for content creation, streamlining the process, providing additional ideas for inspiration, and filling out spaces for more fleshed out content.

However, AI language models, while useful and impressive, are still in their infancy. They are prone to misinformation and error. Generative AI is best used when melded with human intuition. Teams should view it as a tool in their toolkit rather than a full-on replacement for the content creation process.

Identifying AI Opportunities

We’re all in pretty firm agreement: AI is helpful. But how do we identify where to use it? How can businesses identify opportunities for AI in their processes? There’s a vast array of use cases emerging due to AI’s ability to enhance efficiency, but how can we apply them to our businesses? From text and speech analysis to object recognition and process automation, AI presents numerous opportunities for businesses to streamline operations and achieve their objectives.

One of the best ways to identify AI opportunities is to take stock of what a team does and consider where automation or analysis can be deployed. For instance, if a team spends hours manually entering data, then process automation systems may save time and energy. If customer service teams are inundated with repetitive questions from customers, then natural language processing could help automate responses. There are numerous other opportunities, from sentiment analysis to visual recognition, that can be explored depending on the use case.

AI’s Contribution to Customer Experience

In the years to come, AI will play an increasingly prominent role in dramatically enhancing communication, improving user experiences, and fostering inclusivity, especially through accessibility features. The ability of AI to personalize interactions and streamline customer support processes was emphasized, showcasing its pivotal role in shaping positive customer experiences.

At the same time, AI should not be seen as a magic bullet for addressing customer service issues. It is important to understand that AI-driven solutions have limitations, and the technology must be used responsibly with full transparency. Human oversight is essential in order to monitor usage and outcomes, identify emerging trends and anomalies, and make adjustments when needed.

Ethical Considerations in AI

As AI’s influence grows, ethical considerations become paramount. Will AI replace human workers?  How will it be used? Are decisions being made ethically and fairly? The discussion at the roundtable focused on the importance of assessing AI’s implications for human rights, privacy, and well-being.

As AI technologies automate certain tasks, there is a risk of job displacement for certain professions. The ethical challenge lies in finding ways to mitigate the negative consequences of AI on employment and facilitate a smooth transition for affected workers. Additionally, there are concerns about the concentration of power in the hands of a few tech companies that develop and control advanced AI systems. Striking a balance between innovation and regulation is essential to ensure that AI benefits society as a whole rather than exacerbating social and economic inequalities. Ethical frameworks and guidelines are crucial in guiding the development and deployment of AI to ensure that it aligns with your business’s human-centric values.

Leveraging AI on a Budget

Addressing a practical concern, the hosts explored how small and medium-sized businesses can leverage AI without a hefty budget. Christopher emphasized the abundance of pre-trained AI models available for specific focus areas, enabling businesses to implement AI without an in-depth understanding of data science. The key is to evaluate options, determine goals, and choose cost-effective solutions that align with the organization’s needs.
